A2 Dome Shaker Card: Video Tutorial | Scrappy Boy Stamps

Writer's picture: Rick AdkinsRick Adkins

There’s something so magical about a shaker card. Maybe it’s the way the sequins sparkle or the satisfying sound when you give it a little shake, but they always bring a smile to my face. Today, I want to share a fun twist on the traditional shaker card using the A2 Dome Shaker Card Die Set from Scrappy Boy Stamps. It’s the perfect way to create a unique, dimensional design, and paired with the Beauty & the Beast 6 x 6 Pattern Paper Pack, this card feels like it’s straight out of a fairytale.

A2 Dome Shaker Card:

When I first saw the A2 Dome Shaker Card Die Set, I couldn’t wait to try it. The dome shape immediately caught my eye—it’s such a fresh take on a shaker card. I love how the rounded edges give it an elegant, polished look while still being playful. If you’ve never worked with shaker cards before, this die set makes the process so much easier because all the pieces are perfectly designed to fit together.

For this card, I used white cardstock to die-cut all the parts: the dome background panel, the frame, and the base layers. I also cut out the rose pieces (stem and flower) from the set. One of my favorite features is how the frame can be created by stacking the two stitched dome dies—it adds a lovely detail and makes the shaker element stand out even more.

Pro Tip: When creating shaker cards, it’s always a good idea to cut two frames for added sturdiness. Layering them together helps the card hold up better, especially if it’s being mailed or handled frequently.

Adding Color with Distress Inks

Once I had all the pieces cut, it was time to add some color. I turned to my trusty Distress Inks to customize the cardstock. I love how versatile they are—you can create subtle gradients, bold pops of color, or anything in between. For this project, I blended shades of green for the stem and rich reds for the rose.

Here’s a little story: I remember when I first started card making, I didn’t think I “needed” Distress Inks. I figured colored cardstock would do the trick. But once I gave them a try, it completely changed the way I create. The ability to blend and layer colors adds so much depth and personality to a project, and now I can’t imagine crafting without them.

If you’re new to blending, don’t worry—it’s easier than it looks! Start with a light hand and build up the color gradually. And don’t forget to use a blending tool or brush for smooth results.

Bringing the Shaker Card to Life

Now comes the fun part: putting it all together! One of the details that makes this card so special is the rose inside the shaker element. I attached it to the base layer of the dome and stamped a sweet sentiment from the Rose Stained Glass Window Stamp Set right next to it. The simplicity of the rose paired with the shimmer of the sequins creates such a beautiful effect.

To build the shaker, I added an acetate window behind the frame and used foam strips to create the depth needed to hold the shaker bits. Speaking of sequins, this is where you can really let your creativity shine. I chose a mix of gold and clear sequins to tie in with the Beauty & the Beast theme, but you can use whatever suits your project best.

Pro Tip: When adding sequins or shaker bits, less is more. It’s tempting to fill the shaker completely, but leaving a bit of space allows everything to move freely and keeps the design from feeling cluttered.

A Touch of Fairytale Elegance

To tie everything together, I used a piece of patterned paper from the Beauty & the Beast 6 x 6 Pattern Paper Pack as the background. The rich, romantic patterns in this pack are perfect for creating a storybook vibe. I cut the paper to 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" to cover the A2 card base and adhered the completed shaker element on top.

The end result? A card that feels as magical as the story it’s inspired by. I can already imagine giving this card to someone special and seeing their face light up when they give it a shake.

Why I Love This Project

What I love most about this card is how versatile the design is. You can use the A2 Dome Shaker Card Die Set with any color scheme, theme, or sentiment to create something completely unique. Whether you’re crafting for a birthday, anniversary, or just because, this die set is a must-have for your stash.

And don’t be intimidated by shaker cards! They may look intricate, but with the right tools (and a little patience), they’re surprisingly easy to make. Plus, the joy they bring to the recipient makes every minute worth it.
