Bear-thday Surprise Birthday Card:

A Rainbow of Fun: Creating the Background

Let’s dive into the card details. One of my favorite techniques is ink blending, and for this card, I created a vibrant rainbow background. I started by masking off a straight line using 1" Mint Tape from Scrapbook.com on a piece of Neenah Solar White 80 lbs Cardstock. Using my trusty Cotton Tail Blending Brushes from The Rabbit Hole Designs, I blended a series of Distress Inks in rainbow order: Abandoned Coral, Spiced Marmalade, Squeezed Lemonade, Twisted Citron, Peacock Feathers, and Wilted Violet.

Here’s a little pro tip: When blending, always start off the edge of your cardstock and use circular motions to avoid harsh lines. This helps achieve that smooth, seamless transition between colors.

Grounding the Design

After blending the rainbow stripes, I removed the Mint Tape and placed it over the rainbow side to protect it. Then, I blended Hickory Smoke and Black Soot Distress Inks to create a ground for my bear to stand on. The contrast between the vibrant rainbow and the neutral ground adds depth and makes the central image pop.

Stamping and Coloring the Bear

The star of the card is, of course, the happy bear from the Bear-thday Surprise Stamp Set. I stamped the bear onto Neenah Solar White 80 lbs Cardstock with Memento Tuxedo Black Ink, which is perfect for alcohol marker coloring. I used my Spectrum Noir Tri-Blend Brush Markers from both the original set and the extended set to color the bear. These markers are fantastic because they simplify shading with their three-in-one design.

A quick story: I remember the first time I used these Tri-Blend markers. I was hesitant, thinking I’d struggle with the blending, but they made it so easy! It was a game-changer for my coloring techniques, and I’m sure you’ll love them too.

Adding Confetti and Sparkle

To tie the whole design together, I stamped the little confetti images from the Bear-thday Surprise Stamp Set onto the background. I colored the confetti pieces with the Tri-Blend Brush Markers to match the rainbow background, creating a cohesive and festive look. For a final touch of whimsy, I added a few pieces of different colored circle embellishments from the new Sugar Confetti Embellishment Mix by Trinity Stamps. A few Razzleberry Bubbles Embellishments sprinkled around added the perfect touch of sparkle.

Assembly and Finishing Touches

I trimmed the card front down to 4" x 5 1/4" and attached it to an A2 size top-folding card base made from Neenah Solar White Ultra Thick 110 lbs Cardstock. I then stamped the “Happy Birthday” sentiment in the sash on the bear and cut it out with the coordinating Bear-thday Surprise Dies. Using a little Instant Dimensional Foam Tape, I popped the bear up in the center of the card front, adding some dimension to the design.
