Hi friends! Welcome back to the Holiday Card Series 2024. I’m thrilled to have you here for Day 12, and today’s card might just be one of my favorites! We’re combining a playful holiday design with a super fun technique that I think you’ll love: double stenciling. This card features the Caffeinated Critters Stamp Set, the Latte Love Stencil, and the Rounded Arch Stencils, all from Miss Ink Stamps. It’s a cheerful way to bring texture and depth to your holiday cards while spotlighting an adorable caffeinated penguin. Let’s dive into the inspiration behind this card and how it all came together.
A Penguin with Personality
When I first saw the Caffeinated Critters Stamp Set, I knew I had to use the penguin for a holiday card. There’s just something about his spunky little face and that cozy cup of coffee that screams festive fun! As a coffee lover myself, this set hit close to home. I can almost imagine this penguin sipping his latte while watching the snow fall outside a frosty window.
I stamped him with Memento Tuxedo Black Ink and colored him with my Copic Markers, keeping a classic holiday palette I added a little red. A little tip: don’t be afraid to add bold shadows to critter images—they help the characters pop off the card! After cutting him out with the coordinating die, he was ready to take center stage.
Double the Fun with Double Stenciling
The real star of this card is the background, created with the Latte Love Stencil and the Rounded Arch Stencils. This double stenciling technique is a game-changer when you want to add layered interest without adding bulk.
Here’s how it works: you layer one stencil over another to create a "masking effect." For this card, the Rounded Arch Stencil framed the cozy latte pattern from the Latte Love Stencil perfectly. I used Frayed Burlap and Ground Espresso Distress Oxide Inks to blend through both stencils, keeping the tones warm and inviting. Adding a touch of Vintage Photo Distress Oxide Ink around the edges gave it a softly aged, rustic look—perfect for a holiday card.
Pro Tip: When working with multiple stencils, secure them with low-tack tape or a stencil mat to keep everything in place. This prevents smudging and makes the process much easier.
Building Layers for a Finished Look
To anchor the background, I layered it onto a piece of red cardstock from the Jolly Smooth Cardstock Paper Pad. The red border adds a classic holiday touch and helps the whole design pop. From there, I adhered it to a top-folding A2 card base.
For the sentiment, I reached for the Modern Typeset Frame Dies and die-cut the letters to spell out "Merry Christmas." These clean, modern letters worked beautifully with the rustic background and playful critter. I arranged the sentiment along the top and bottom of the card, leaving space for the penguin in the center.
Finishing Touches That Sparkle
Every card needs a little sparkle, right? I added Stardust Stickles to the coffee and a few accents on the penguin. It’s amazing how a tiny bit of shimmer can bring a design to life! I also used a white gel pen to add highlights to both the penguin and the die-cut letters—this simple detail adds so much dimension and polish.
Finally, I scattered a few Clear Twinkle Rhinestones for a hint of holiday magic. They catch the light beautifully and tie everything together.
Why I Love This Card
This card was such a joy to make! The double stenciling technique is versatile and works with so many designs, but it really shines when paired with playful images like the Caffeinated Critters. I also love how the warm tones and rustic touches give the card a cozy, festive feel.
If you’re looking to try something new with your holiday cards this year, give double stenciling a go. It’s an easy way to add depth and texture, and it opens up endless possibilities for mixing and matching your stencils.
