Effortless Clean and Simple Card:
The Inspiration Behind the Card
I've always loved the ocean and its fascinating creatures, and the Happy Flappy Stamp Set captures that perfectly. When I saw the great white shark stamp, I immediately imagined a fun and vibrant underwater scene. Watercoloring seemed like the perfect technique to bring this vision to life, and using Distress Ink Re-Inkers added just the right amount of color and vibrancy.
Materials You'll Need
Here’s a quick rundown of the materials I used for this project:
Happy Flappy Stamp Set from Pajama Crafter Stamps
Canson XL 140 lbs Cold Press Watercolor Paper (cut to 4 1/4" x 5 1/2")
Distress Ink Re-Inkers (used as watercolors)
Distress Inks (Blueprint Sketch, Evergreen Bough, Tumbled Glass)
Desert Storm 100 lbs Cardstock (A2 top folding card base)
Arctic Blue Rhinestones from Pajama Crafter Stamps
Creating the Card
I started by stamping the great white shark from the Happy Flappy Stamp Set in Pebble Beach Archival Ink onto a piece of Canson XL watercolor paper. This archival ink is perfect for watercoloring because it doesn't smudge or bleed. It's my go-to ink for projects like this!
For the watercoloring, I used Distress Ink Re-Inkers. If you haven't tried using re-inkers as watercolors, you're in for a treat. They provide such vibrant and beautiful colors. I simply diluted them with a bit of water and started painting. The cold press watercolor paper handles the water beautifully, giving a smooth blend and making the shark look lively and dynamic.
Pro Tip: When watercoloring with Distress Ink Re-Inkers, start with a light wash and build up the color gradually. This way, you can control the intensity and avoid over-saturating the paper.
Next, I created the background using a circle stencil. I positioned the stencil on the card front and ink blended the top of the circle with Blueprint Sketch, Evergreen Bough, and Tumbled Glass Distress Inks. These colors blend beautifully together and create a stunning underwater gradient effect. For the bottom of the circle, I used Toffee Crunch Memento Ink to mimic the sandy sea floor. The trick here is to blend gently and gradually to achieve a smooth transition.
While the stencil mask was still in place, I stamped the hammerhead shark and stingray using Blueprint Sketch and Evergreen Bough Distress Inks. This added depth and interest to the background without overpowering the main image. Once I removed the stencil, I was thrilled to see the crisp edges and clean design. It's always exciting to reveal the final look after removing a stencil mask!
Pro Tip: Keep the stencil mask in place when stamping additional images to ensure a clean and defined background. This technique helps maintain the focus on your main image.
For the sentiment, I stamped it below the main image on the card front. Inside the card, I stamped the hammerhead and stingray along with an inside sentiment on the Desert Storm A2 top folding card base. This ties the whole design together and adds a professional finish.
To complete the card, I attached the card front to the card base and added a few Arctic Blue Rhinestones from Pajama Crafter Stamps. I placed three rhinestones on the bottom left of the sentiment and two on the top right. These little embellishments add just the right amount of sparkle and make the card pop.
Pro Tip: When adding rhinestones or other embellishments, use an odd number for a more balanced and visually appealing look.
