Faux Shaker Card:

Discovering the Happy Beach Critters Stamp Set

When I first laid eyes on the Happy Beach Critters Stamp Set, I was instantly smitten. The playful turtles and the cheerful crab just screamed summer fun to me. I knew they would be perfect for a beach-themed card, and I couldn’t wait to get started.

Stamping and Coloring with Joy

For this project, I stamped the female and male turtles, along with the crab, using Memento Tuxedo Black Ink onto Neenah Solar White 80 lbs Cardstock. I love this cardstock because it holds up beautifully to coloring, and the Memento ink is perfect for working with alcohol markers.

Once the ink was dry, I brought these critters to life with my Ohuhu Honolulu Brush Markers. These markers are a dream to work with—they blend smoothly and have such vibrant colors. As I colored, I found myself getting lost in the process, imagining these little creatures frolicking on a sunny beach.

Creating the Perfect Background

Next, it was time to create a fitting background. I selected a piece of pattern paper from the Sea Life 6 x 6 Pattern Paper Pad by Echo Park. The aquatic patterns and bright colors complemented my stamped images perfectly. I trimmed the paper to 3 3/4" x 5", just slightly smaller than my A2 card base, to leave a nice white border around the edges.

To frame my scene, I used the smallest rectangle die from the You've Been Framed Dies by The Rabbit Hole Designs, cutting it out of Neenah Solar White 80 lbs Cardstock. Then, using my Nesting Oval Dies from Hero Arts, I cut an oval window from the top center of the rectangle. This created a lovely window for my critters to peek through.

Adding Sentiments with a Personal Touch

Using my MISTI, I stamped a sentiment from the Happy Beach Critters Stamp Set in the center of the pattern paper with Versafine Onyx Black Ink. This ink gives such a crisp, clean impression every time. Below the oval window, I stamped another sentiment from the same set on the white cardstock rectangle. These little messages added a touch of warmth and cheer to the card.

Assembling the Card

Now came the fun part—putting everything together. I layered the white cardstock window piece over the pattern paper with Foam Adhesive to give it some dimension. Then, I attached this assembled piece to a top-folding A2 card base made from Neenah Solar White 110 lbs Ultra Thick Cardstock using Bearly Arts Glue. This glue is my go-to for its strong hold and precision tip, perfect for detailed work.

Arranging the Critters

I arranged the female turtle and crab to hang over the edge of the oval window opening, while the boy turtle nestled under the sentiment on the window panel. To ensure they stayed in place, I used a combination of foam adhesive for the parts hanging over the window and liquid glue for the rest.

The Magic of Faux Shaker

Here’s where the faux shaker magic happens. I wanted to create the illusion of a shaker card without the hassle of acetate and sequins. Instead, I used Girl's Best Friends Rhinestones, attaching them with Bearly Arts Liquid Glue around the bottom of the window opening and scattering a few inside the window. This created a sparkling effect that mimics a shaker card but is much easier to achieve. It’s a technique I’ve been seeing a lot lately, and I had so much fun trying it out.

Pro Tip: Simplify Your Shaker Cards

If you love the look of shaker cards but find them intimidating, this faux shaker technique is a game-changer. It’s simpler, less time-consuming, and still gives you that eye-catching sparkle. Plus, it’s a great way to use up those rhinestones and gems you have in your stash.
