Hexagon Halloween Mini Shadow Box! Video Tutorial | Day 15 Spooky & Sweet Halloween

Hello, crafty friends! Welcome back to Day 15 of the Spooky & Sweet Halloween Series! Today, I’m really excited to share a fun little project that combines a Halloween theme with a unique twist— a Hexagon Halloween Mini Shadow Box! This piece is not only a standout card design but also a fun keepsake or home décor piece that’ll add a little Halloween flair to any space.

I used the Hexagon Ornament Die Set and Hexagon Halloween Add-On Dies from Pixi Dust Designs to bring this shadow box to life, and let me tell you—it was so much fun to play around with the dimensional layers in this project. If you’re looking for something different and super creative to try this Halloween, this project has it all. Plus, there’s a video tutorial available for those who want to see how it all comes together in real time!

Hexagon Halloween Mini Shadow Box:

Versatile Supplies: What You’ll Need

Before we dive into the details, let’s chat about supplies. I kept things fairly simple but impactful:

  • Pixi Dust Designs Hexagon Ornament Die Set – The foundation for our shadow box.

  • Pixi Dust Designs Hexagon Halloween Add-On Dies – Perfect for creating those layered Halloween scenes.

  • Black cardstock (for the base and layers) – A must for that spooky vibe.

  • Orange cardstock (for the inner layer) – A great pop of color to brighten the interior.

  • Purple cardstock – I’ll explain why this was a lifesaver later!

  • Liquid glue – To keep everything sturdy and secure.

What I love about this project is that it’s so adaptable. If Halloween isn’t your thing, Pixi Dust Designs also has a Nativity Add-On Die Set that’s just as beautiful for a Christmas-themed version. The versatility of these dies really makes it easy to switch things up for any season.

Building the Shadow Box: Dimension & Depth

Now, onto the fun part—putting it all together! When I first started this project, I knew I wanted the shadow box to have multiple layers to create that classic Halloween depth and dimension. Using the Hexagon Ornament Die Set, I cut the base layer, two side pieces, and the top from black cardstock. The die set even comes with a stitched hexagon die, which adds that extra finished look.

A little pro tip here—when assembling something with layers, liquid glue is your best friend. It gives you just enough wiggle room to adjust pieces for perfect alignment. Trust me, I’ve had my share of crooked shadow boxes when I tried using tape runner!

I also cut a layer from orange cardstock to place inside the box, which gave it this nice pop of color behind the Halloween-themed layers. It’s subtle but makes a big difference in helping the design stand out.

Bringing the Scene to Life with Die-Cut Layers

This is where the project really gets exciting! Using the Hexagon Halloween Add-On Dies, I die-cut three different hexagon scenes from black cardstock. The first layer features a bat flying across a moon and clouds, the second has an adorable jack-o-lantern, and the third layer is the backdrop for it all.

I love how these layers work together to create depth. The bat layer even has little flaps that you can fold down to attach to the sides, which makes it pop forward from the background. It's such a clever design element, and honestly, I had so much fun figuring out the positioning for that perfect 3D effect.

A tip for when you’re adding these layers: Test out your placement before gluing anything down. That way, you can play around with the spacing and see what creates the most depth before you commit. You’ll be surprised how much difference even a small adjustment can make!

A Contrast Fix: Purple to the Rescue

Let me tell you about a little design dilemma I had while finishing this shadow box. Originally, I was planning to use the stitched hexagon layer from the die set as my top layer in black. But when I laid it on top, it just didn’t pop the way I wanted it to. Everything blended together too much, and I felt like it needed more contrast.

So, I went back to my stash, grabbed some purple cardstock, and recut the stitched hexagon layer. It made all the difference! The purple not only provided contrast but also tied the whole Halloween theme together. Sometimes, a project just needs that last-minute color swap to bring it to life. Don’t be afraid to trust your instincts and make those changes—it’s what makes each project uniquely yours.

Make It Your Own: Customize for Different Seasons

One of my favorite things about this hexagon shadow box is how versatile it is. While I went with a Halloween theme for today’s project, the base die set is perfect for any occasion. As I mentioned earlier, there’s also a Nativity Add-On Die Set available if you’re leaning more towards a Christmas theme this season. Imagine creating a sweet, dimensional nativity scene inside the hexagon—how beautiful would that be?

The possibilities are endless! You could also change up the color scheme or use patterned paper for even more customization. This project is all about having fun and experimenting with what works for you.
