Scarecrow Couple Friendsgiving Card: Pixi Dust Designs

Hello, friends! Today, I’m thrilled to share a project that's all about celebrating Friendsgiving in a playful, heartwarming way. For this card, I wanted to create a charming little scarecrow couple, each with their own personality, to add a unique touch to the season’s festivities. I’ll be using Pixi Dust Designs' Autumn Accessories VT Die Set, Hello Autumn Slimline Die Set, and the Pumpkin Spice Treats Stamp Set (for the sentiment) and I’m excited to walk you through the design choices and little tweaks that made this card so special!

Scarecrow Couple Friendsgiving Card:

Bringing the Scarecrows to Life with Die Cuts

For this project, I decided to create both a male and female scarecrow, each with a distinct look. When I started, I loved the idea of adding a bit of character to my dies by modifying the standard cuts. To do this, I pulled out the Autumn Accessories VT Die Set and cut enough pieces to make two scarecrows, but I had something a little different in mind for the second one.

One of my favorite techniques when working with dies is a little bit of creative modification. For the female scarecrow, I wanted to make her look unique by turning her shirt into a dress. Here’s where partial die-cutting came in handy. Using my Cutter-bee scissors, I carefully cut away a bit of the shirt die to shape it into a dress. To top it off, I added some “hair” with extra hay pieces (meant for hands and feet) to give her a bit more personality. Little changes like these are what make card-making so enjoyable because you can bring such specific, custom elements to your designs.

For the male scarecrow, I kept it simple by cutting the dies as they were intended, giving him a classic look with all the charm of an autumn harvest. These two characters ended up balancing each other perfectly—a playful couple ready to celebrate the season!

Adding Autumn Embellishments with Custom Colors

To complement the scarecrow couple, I wanted to add a few autumn elements that would make the scene feel even cozier. The Hello Autumn Slimline Die Set and the Autumn Accessories VT Die Set were perfect for this! They includes leaf, pumpkin, and apple barrel dies—just what I needed to add those extra details that make a card pop.

For coloring, instead of pulling out different colored cardstock, I used my Ohuhu Honolulu Brush Markers to add all the hues I wanted. This is a wonderful technique for creating a cohesive color palette across all elements without hunting down matching cardstock. Plus, coloring the pieces gave me control over the exact tones I wanted—like rich reds for the apples, muted oranges for the pumpkins, and soft yellows for the scarecrows’ hay. This step was all about building a warm and inviting Friendsgiving color scheme!

Pro Tip: If you’re trying this technique, I recommend coloring your die-cuts before gluing them together. It’s much easier to handle individual pieces when coloring, and it keeps your colors looking crisp and neat!

Crafting the Background and Sentiment

For the card base, I went with Neenah Solar White 80 lbs Cardstock and lightly blended some Tumbled Glass and Antique Linen Distress Oxide Inks to give a soft, subtle backdrop. This color blend creates a hint of sky with just a bit of warmth, which is perfect for a fall scene without overwhelming the elements in the foreground.

I then used the “Friendsgiving” sentiment from the Pumpkin Spice Treats Stamp Set (also from Pixi Dust Designs), stamped in Versafine Clair Fallen Leaves Ink. This deep brown ink complements the rustic autumn theme beautifully. You could easily substitute this with Versafine Clair Nocturne Ink if you prefer a stronger contrast, but I liked the softer look Fallen Leaves gave.

Putting It All Together

Now that all the elements were ready, it was time to assemble! I attached the scarecrow couple to the card front using liquid adhesive, so they had a secure but slightly flexible hold. To add dimension, I used foam squares to pop up the pumpkins and the apple barrel. This layering effect is one of my favorite tricks—it makes the elements look like they’re part of a 3D scene. I especially love mixing different heights of foam squares (1mm, 2mm, and 3mm) to create depth and give each piece a bit of spotlight.

With everything placed, I added a few more touches: tucking in some leaves and apples around the scarecrows and adding white gel pen highlights with my Uni-ball Signo White Gel Pen. These little accents bring so much life to the card, making the characters and elements look vibrant and polished. I also added a faux stitched border around the edges to tie everything together, creating a finished look that frames the whole scene.

Pro Tip: When adding highlights with a gel pen, a light touch goes a long way. Little dots or short lines on the edges of your die-cuts add a sense of light and dimension without overwhelming the scene.

Finishing Touches and Card Assembly

To finish up, I attached the card front to a top-folding A2 base made from Neenah Solar White Ultra Thick Cardstock. This final layer adds durability, and the heavyweight cardstock gives it a professional feel when you hold it. There’s something satisfying about creating a card that looks as polished as a store-bought one, but with so much more heart and personality!
