Shake Up Your Craft Game: Video Tutorial | Pixi Dust Designs

Writer: Rick AdkinsRick Adkins

Hi, crafty friends! Today, I’m excited to share a fun and playful card that’s sure to bring a smile to anyone’s face. I created a strawberry-themed shaker card using some of my favorite Pixi Dust Designs products — and let me tell you, it turned out berry cute! Shaker cards are always a hit because they’re interactive, but this one has a little extra personality thanks to the Kawaii Faces Die Set. If you’ve ever struggled with getting shaker elements to sit just right or wondered how to create a smooth, seamless look without using foam tape, this project is for you.

Let’s dive into the details — and don’t worry, I’ve got some helpful tips along the way!

Shake Up Your Craft Game:

Building the Shaker Without Foam Tape

One of the biggest challenges with shaker cards is getting the well deep enough to let the shaker bits move freely without everything sticking together. Foam tape works, but sometimes it leaves gaps or makes the edges look uneven. That’s why I decided to try something different this time — and it worked beautifully!

Instead of using foam tape, I die cut the frame from the Shaker Strawberry Die Set multiple times from white cardstock scraps. By stacking and gluing them together, I created a sturdy well for the shaker bits. Not only did this give the shaker a cleaner, more polished edge, but it also prevented any shaker bits from escaping through small gaps (because let’s be honest — that’s the last thing you want after all that work).

Pro Tip: If you’ve ever had shaker bits get stuck along the edges, try running a powder tool or anti-static bag along the inside of the frame before adding the acetate. It reduces static and helps the bits move more freely!

Choosing the Right Patterned Paper

I wanted this card to have a fun, springtime vibe, so I pulled out the Happy Easter 6 x 6 Pattern Paper Pad from Pixi Dust Designs. This paper pad is filled with cheerful pastel patterns that work beautifully for Easter cards — but don’t let the name fool you! The soft colors and patterns work well for all kinds of spring and summer-themed projects.

I used the same pattern for both the base layer of the shaker and the frame to keep the design cohesive. Then, I cut the strawberry’s stem and leaves from a contrasting pattern in the pad to give it a pop of color.

Pro Tip: When you’re mixing and matching patterns, try to keep one element (like color or scale) consistent across the design. It helps everything feel balanced without overwhelming the eye.

Adding Personality with the Kawaii Faces

I love a good shaker card — but adding a cute face to it? That’s next level. The Kawaii Faces Die Set from Pixi Dust Designs has so many adorable expressions, and they’re the perfect size for shaker elements.

I die cut the eyes and mouth from cardstock scraps and carefully added them to the center of the strawberry shaker. It instantly gave the card a playful, happy feel. It’s funny how a simple detail like that can completely change the mood of a card!

To finish it off, I cut the strawberry seeds from gold mirror cardstock. The shine added just the right amount of contrast without being too much.

Pro Tip: If you’re working with small die-cut pieces like these, try using a jewel picker or the tip of a craft knife to place them. It makes positioning them so much easier!

Bringing It All Together

While the shaker was drying, I worked on the background. I cut a piece of patterned paper from the Happy Easter Pattern Paper Pad to 4 ¼” x 5 ½” and attached it to my A2 card base.

For a little extra texture and detail, I used the Doily Die Set from Pixi Dust Designs. I die cut three pieces from white cardstock and added some ink blending for a soft, colorful look:

The ink blending gave the doilies a soft, almost watercolor-like feel that balanced out the crisp lines of the shaker element.

Once the shaker was dry, I attached it to the center of the large doily. I then added the sentiment "I Love You Berry Much," die cut from black cardstock scraps using the sentiment die from the Shaker Strawberry Die Set.

Finally, I scattered a few of the Strawberry Is My Jam Shaker Bits around the card for some extra sparkle. (I almost used the Strawberry Shortcake Shaker Bits — maybe next time!)

Final Thoughts

This card was so much fun to make, and using die-cut frames instead of foam tape made a huge difference in how clean and polished the final shaker element looked. Plus, the combination of the patterned paper, gold seeds, and cute face gave it so much personality!

Shaker cards are one of those projects that always impress, but they don’t have to be complicated. I hope this inspires you to try building a shaker element using stacked die cuts — it might just become your new favorite technique!
